Event Description

On July 9, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read in front of George Washington and his troops in New York City. The troops were so moved by what they had just heard that they tore down the statue of King George in the Bowling Green section of Manhatten was melted down to make musket balls for the Continental army. Forensic evidence proved that some of these musket balls were used at the Battle of Monmouth.

On the night of July 4, citizens of Philadelphia ripped King George III's coat of arms from the State House door and threw it into a bonfire.

In Savannah, citizens even held a fake funeral for the King when the news finally reached them in August.
