- What would you like to get out of being a member of agile philly?
- My name is Joanna Branch and I am the PA manager for an afterschool program called buildOn. Through buildOn afterschool programs in high schools across the U.S., urban youth are contributing intensive community service, helping seniors, young children, and the homeless in their communities, and are also helping to build schools in some of the poorest countries on the planet. Students in buildOn programs, located in 118 urban high schools across america, have contributed a staggering 706,000 hours of service. buildOn also partners these same students with developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Central America to build schools. buildOn's school construction programs have completed 383 schools to date. And through the unparalleled commitment of parents and grandparents to educate their children, both boys and girls, rural villages provide all the volunteer labor in collaboration with buildOn to break ground on a new school every six days.
buildOn would like to develop an app for our high school students that could work with their mobile devices and on the internet. Our initial vision for the app is that students can use it to track their community service hours and share what they're accomplishing with friends and family. They could earn different badges for accomplishing different service challenges (# of service hours, or type of service like helping seniors, or helping kids). We pictured students being able to create a profile sharing what motivates them to serve, post photos to a common location, and complete entries/respond to journal prompts about what they're doing. It might look something like foursquare, but for buildOn students. We want the app to be free to students and not advertise to students.
This is a big dream, and a huge undertaking for buildOn. Of course, it would be incredible if we could find someone willing to donate the programming for a huge project like this. If that's not possible we would love to at least have a conversation with someone who understands app development to help us figure out how we might make this an affordable long term goal for buildOn.
