Event Description

The Sultana is the worst maritime disaster in the United States.  It occurred on April 27, 1865

Other Maritime disasters occurred on the open ocean and not within the U.S.

Killed were many Union soldiers who had survived the Prisoner of War camp in Andersonville, only to die on the Mississippi River in this tradgic Ship accident.

Sultana exploded and sank in the Mississippi River, killing an estimated 1,200 to 1,800 Union soldiers who were released from prison and on their way home.

It had a capacity for 376 passengers and had over 2500 aboard.   The incentive was $5 for each man who boarded.

The sinking of the Sultana claimed more victims than the Titanic, yet the tragedy remains largely forgotten in American history
