Last December, Chaeny gave an Ignite Talk at the Code California launch event where he talked about the future government workforce and the skill sets needed to provide better solutions to the state’s most vexing problems.

In his current role as Director of the Office of Innovation, he leads a team that works to cultivate open communication, continuous learning, precise problem definition and experimentation to generate innovative ways to deliver health care services and information to the citizen of California.

On February 22 in an online discussion, Chaeny will be available for a more in-depth discussion about the value of open government, where he will answer questions from a live audience.

Background:

At the launch On December 12, 2018, the Code California Playbook was released to provide guidance on creating a collaborative, open source community within California state government. Learn more about Code California Playbook, platform and related policies at go.code.ca.gov.

In May 2018, the California Department of Technology issued a policy encouraging the use of non-proprietary software in government IT projects. Technology Letter 18-02 outlined the use of custom-developed source code and its reuse through a public code repository that will give agencies more opportunities to work together and eliminate duplication.

California is working to foster an atmosphere of collaboration that will make it easier to procure, manage, and secure open source efforts along with expanding software peer review, perform security testing, reuse existing solutions and share knowledge.
