Supporting Women in Agile - The Men's Side - So what more is needed in the Workplace?

by John Voris

As managers, we men should be creating a workplace that is friendly, welcoming, even-handed and fair. We should be cognizant of what is upsetting or irritating in our workplace or to our co-workers. We may not know all they deal with, and we cannot address all concerns of gender in the workplace - but we should make attempts to understand the concerns of our staff.

Working Agreements and Codes of Conduct can cover many logistical issues of the workplace, but they are not enough. At the end of this experimental discussion, we will develop a Manifesto (a Code of Conduct v2) that states what we as managers shall strive to do in our workplace. This is a facilitated discussion with frank and open talk to tackle ingrained biases.

John Voris is a CSM and Lead Coordinator of AgilePhilly. As a member of many volunteer user groups, he has seen how some groups and his own workplace staff are slow to show concerns of changing 21st Century attitudes. The PHL Police Department has examples for us to talk about.

Kanban at Vanguard: How enterprise services planning improves outcomes at the world's leading mutual fund company

by David Hughes

"Scrum-Stall" is a common symptom of dysfunction when knowledge work teams favor procedure over committing to evolutionary change.

This experience report is about the successful experiments at Vanguard aligning the Kanban Method and Enterprise Services Planning (ESP) with its own enabling practices to improve key outcome measures. The theme of "Overcoming ScrumStall" by adopting the Kanban Method is covered, with evidence of dramatic and immediate improvement in the flow of business value after adopting Kanban.

Small Batch Sizes Enable Everything, even in the Government

by Kimberly Davis

Lean practices teach us that small batch sizes optimize flow of value to market. Small batch sizes also enable organizations to focus on building quality into our systems by enabling the power of continuous integration, enabling faster feedback cycles, increasing our ability to debug, increasing our focus on simplicity, decreasing lead and cycle time, and decreasing snow plowing testing efforts.

These things are critical for helping to build quality into our products. In the government sector, it also enables the alignment of traditional Earned Value Management constraints and Agile for project management tracking. Kimberly Davis, ASRC Federal's Agile Solutions Architect, will discuss how their work decomposition process has been a critical component in facilitating quality and alignment for their supported government agencies.

Kimberly Davis works for ASRC Federal as an Agile Solutions Architect. She leads large Scaled Agile transitions for government agencies across ASRC Federal's enterprise, which also includes proposal support, client meeting support on enterprise Agility offerings, Scaled Agile certification trainings and powering an Agile CoP. Kimberly has a passion for Scaling Agile, Agile Transformations and Agile Culture and has presented at conferences in the Philadelphia area where she is also an AgilePhilly mentor. Kimberly is a Scaled Agile Program Consultant (SPC) giving her the ability to train and certify others in Scaled Agile practices. Additionally, she holds many Agile certifications as she believes it is essential to continuously improve in oneself: SA, SP, CSM, CSPO, CAL1, ICP-FDO, and PMI-ACP.
Value Stream Mapping for Business Agility

by Kimberly Davis

Agile is a mindset based off a set of core values and principles which strive for delivering incremental value delivery to consumers. While it was first derived for modernizing software development practices, those values and principles can be applied throughout an organization and any type of organization - not just one that produces software.

All businesses are producing something valuable to market, so the concepts of Agility are universal.

Kimberly Davis, ASRC Federal's Agile Solutions Architect, will discuss how using Value Stream Mapping will identify areas where application of Agile principles are needed to increase throughput of value to the market. The Value Stream Mapping process helps organizations understand all the steps needed to create deliverable value and where Agility can increase speed to market.

Measuring Success for DevSecOps Adoption

by Kimberly Davis

DevOps is supported by a culture based on "whole team" accountability that enables a Continuous Delivery pipeline of value to customers.

DevSecOps adds an iterative focus on security into this culture which creates a shared responsibility for assuring the Value Stream delivers secure products. For several years, it is consistently reported that resistance to change is the number one reason for Agile adoption failures. Simply stated, culture that does not support Agile adoptions, does not support Agility in general which includes DevSecOps.

Kimberly Davis, ASRC Federal's Agile Solutions Architect, will discuss a method for identifying a purpose for change to create a meaningful mission to support cultural buy-in, establishing incremental steps toward DevSecOps maturity, and a measurement model for baselining and showing growth towards full DevSecOps adoption. These components are essential for fostering a culture that supports any DevSecOps model.

Communities of Practice for Enterprise Agility

by Kimberly Davis

Organizations that have various entities building a multitude of solutions across the enterprise may end up with a number of Agile implementations. Autonomy is important for each entity, however, optimizing as a whole is essential for growing Agile maturity throughout.

Having a centralized, enterprise Agile Community of Practice where all Agile Leaders have a place to learn, discuss and evolve creates harmonious growth that is independent of product solutions and technologies used. Kimberly Davis, ASRC Federal's Agile Solutions Architect, will discuss how their model for a light-weight Agile Community of Practice expedites Agile maturity throughout, including basic Scrum adoption to Scaled Agile with DevSecOps implementation across their enterprise.

Are We Done Yet?

by Robin Ratliff

Consider the average American garage, basement or workshop: truly, it is easier to start a project than to finish one. This applies equally whether you are replacing a faucet or building a software solution.

At work, a deadline introduces an additional wrinkle. Sometimes the deadline leads us to rationalize our project's doneness in the interest of progress. We may cope by changing the scope, changing the deadline, or worst of all - compromising quality.

This session will tell the story of one or more complex projects (for example the construction of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5).

We will survey a few typical reasons projects fail and what we can learn from the epic failures of others. Then we will look at a common sense, locally created, tool that can help ensure your project is "done done done" when you reach the deadline.

This presentation builds on the areas covered in the AgilePhilly Spring Conference of Definition of Done.

Robin will be sharing a project checklist used at Cerner which ensures team members are doing what's necessary during various phases of the project. A sample Project Initialization Plan is included.

Robin Ratliff is a Senior Development Project Manager at Cerner Corporation in Malvern, PA. She is motivated by a strong preference for projects that achieve the stated objective within the allotted timeframe. When not at work, Robin enjoys the endless quest for completion of home improvement projects with her husband Eden and her 115 pound German Shepherd, Toby Keith Ratliff.

Courage is a commonly stated value in agile principles and values.

However, only a small fraction of people in organizations can employ it in extremely limited circumstances. This makes transformation an ellusive target that can cause high levels of frustration at every level of an organization.

Open Mic: Coaching Up

by Jen Wright and Sally Vassalotti

The term "coaching up" traditionally refers to communication with a supervisor or person above you in the organizational chart.

"Coaching up" strategies can be effective for all levels. Have you ever had a conversation with a boss, PO, Scrum Master or leader that did not go well? Is one of your teammates dropping the ball? When difficult situations do happen == or, better yet, when you anticipate them happening == can you let them know about the problem in a polite and helpful manner?

Coworkers should appreciate your initiative. But often times, our instincts tell us to fight and go on the defensive which may result in the blame game.

Jen Wright and Sally Vassalotti will share how to effectively interact with leaders throughout your organization. They will walk you through real-life scenarios they have used to "coach up" effectively. We will try these techniques in groups, so be prepared to share your real-life experiences with us.

Jen Wright is an experienced product manager certified in Pragmatic Marketing (PMC-II) and CSPO with a history of working in the computer software industry. She has seven years of experience in product management using agile methodologies and has been managing and leading teams for over fifteen years.
Agile Philly - A Peer Panel of Common People addressing Common Problems

by Scott Ocamb of RoadmapToAgile.com

A standard part of the October Conference is the "Panel of Experts"

This session will endeavor to have regular members of the monthly meeting discuss their common problems and build rapport for enhanced problem solving.

Since members of Agile Philly are involved in agile software delivery at all levels of maturity, we should share among ourselves successful and unsuccessful ideas. Some members are fortunate enough to be involved with highly mature teams - while others (most likely most of the members) are involved with teams where the maturity level varies widely from low maturity to firms on a clear journey to a high adoption goal.

As a group, we have tremendous experience implementing agile process. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss as peers the challenges we have and some of the success as well. We will use the outline below as a general guide to the discussion. (It roughly follows the Scrum process. And we hope to summarize on post-its the ideas generated.)

. Estimation - discuss all things estimation related from story points to hours to no estimation at all.

. Backlog Grooming - discuss how teams perform this important activity and challenges to making it happen. What happens when it is not done well.

. Sprint Planning- discuss how the meeting is conducted and how teams commit to a sprint. Is velocity and or hour estimates used?

. Sprint Execution - discuss challenges in sprint execution and how teams self-organize.

. Standup - discuss how the meeting is kept short and examples about how they are conducted.

. Sprint Demo - discuss how the meeting is conducted and the challenges that occur. Are features demonstrated prior to the meeting? What happens when a Product Owner is not fully engaged and perhaps misses the meeting?

. Retrospectives - discuss how true value is achieved from this meeting and challenges to reaching that goal.

. Release Schedule - most companies want some type of release schedule or product roadmap. Discuss challenges to meeting this goal and ideas that people use to achieve it.

. DevOps - this has become an extension of the Agile process. Discuss challenges to performing frequent releases as well examples where it is done well.

. Architecture - proper architecture is a true impediment to Agile especially when DevOps is considered. Discuss challenges to getting systems changed to support more vertical slices of features that are independent and examples of where it was done well.

We will explore how Kanban boards are being used in surprising and innovative ways to track things like insurance underwriting, sales funnels, and HR team workflows. We will have a look at how an agency leverages visual boards as they develop digital assets and new campaigns (i.e. "Discovery Kanban"). Finally, we will explore alternative board designs for managing portfolios of work (i.e. "Portfolio Kanban").

By reviewing and analyzing different examples across multiple disciplines, and developing your own alternatives, we hope to generate new insights and deepen our understanding of how to leverage the power of visualization in your own organizations.

Craeg Strong is the CTO of Ariel Partners, a small IT consulting company based in Times Square. He is currently teaching public Kanban classes and coaching teams to adopt and mature Agile/Kanban practices in the NYC area. He has 25 years of experience in information technology, starting at Project Athena during his undergraduate studies at MIT. Mr. Strong has successfully instituted Agile and DevOps practices on large and complex commercial and government software projects, helping them to obtain new capabilities and realize significant cost efficiencies.

Mr. Strong leverages his experience as a hands-on software architect, trainer and agile coach to help remove the barriers that prevent organizations from adopting new technologies== such as cloud. Mr. Strong led a successful transformation of a major FBI Criminal justice program from a traditional waterfall lifecycle and manual intensive processes to lighter weight agile processes and full DevOps automation.

Now You See It! ... Observing Flow Using Kanban Boards

This is a two-part interactive workshop begins with a detailed look at how to interpret Kanban boards and ask thoughtful questions so that you can improve the work of your teams. I will briefly review the Kanban Method and then proceed through a series of several short exercises that will give you an opportunity to review and interpret various Kanban board configurations with other attendees at your table.

Part two of the session puts the attendees in the driver's seat to create their own board configurations. I will provide several business scenario exercises and ask the attendees how they would go about configuring their Kanban board given the unique system constraints for each scenario.

(This workshop is more likely to become a session for an evening monthly meeting, as it may be difficult to fit into the shorter time slots we have for the conference)

Topic: Fun Daily Scrum Networking and ICE-BREAKER questions after introducing their name and company.. A great tool to get teams to realize how easy it is to hold a daily scrum and it is applied here as a social networking ice breaker, so people can create social and professional connections throughout the conference. Groups of 30 people take less than 10 minutes to ask the 3 questions:

1) What fun thing did you do last weekend?

2) What fun thing do you plan to do this coming weekend? and

3) What blockers do you have to having fun this weekend?

-or-

1) What new Agile technique/concept did you do last week or month?

2) What new Agile technique/concept would you like to learn today? and

3) What blockers do you have to trying a new agile concept and could you use some help of follow-up with AgilePhilly?

When we do surveys of topics, your choices do not bind you to any one session.

When you purchase your ticket, that is when we would like

you to commit.

The following list of topics let's us get a inkling on which is more popular. We do this so we can size the rooms properly. Even then, we

may be forced to make last minute changes on the day of the conference. But we are agile and all of us can adjust quickly.

DIRECTIONS

Location of the Agile Philly conference is CERNER

Cerner Health Services

55 Valley Stream Parkway

Malvern, PA 19355-1406

Google Maps: http://bit.ly/1PwBihn

TRAVELLING WESTBOUND IN THE MORNING, THE PA TURNPIKE IS A PARKING LOT from BENSALEM to KING of PRUSSIA. INCLUDE TRAVEL TIME IN YOUR MORNING PLANS.

EXIT 320 on the Pa Turnpike is EZ-PASS ONLY. You cannot pay cash there. If you are without EZ-PASS, use the King of Prussia Exit instead.

If using the PA Turnpike EZPass Exit 320 at Malvern, you will go South on Rte 29

The directions when leaving the Turnpike are . . . LEFT at the light.

LEFT at the 3rd Light is Valley Stream Parkway.

Go 0.45 miles then make a LEFT into #55 Valley Stream Parkway at the sign for “ CERNER Healthineers “

Follow the Service Road around to the Parking Garage of Building III

The entrance and Security Desk with Welcome Table is on the ground floor of the Parking Garage.

so you can park anywhere in or near the parking garage.

Directions From Rte 202 when you are going north

( Suggested Route for people coming from New Jersey )

Exit off of Rte 202 at Malvern, home of Penn State Great Valley and Microsoft

The exit is labeled "Rte 29 NORTH ... GREAT VALLEY "

At the light on the service road Matthews Road, take a RIGHT. At the Super Wawa, Make the RIGHT onto Rte 29 North.

After going over Rte 202, make a RIGHT at the light onto Swedesford Road.

At the SECOND stoplight, make a LEFT onto Valley Stream Parkway

Enter at the THIRD driveway on your RIGHT = This is 55 VALLEY STREAM PARKWAY,

This is the service road that works around the parking lots.

The road will curve to the left to a parking garage in back of the Cerner buildings to your left.

The entrance and Security Desk with Welcome Table is on the ground floor of the Parking Garage.

so you can park anywhere in or near the parking garage.

FROM DOWNTOWN

If you are coming from the airport or Downtown Philly, then you will not take the PA Turnpike at all. The Turnpike will not be a concern. You will probably go North on the Schukyll Expressway and at King of Prussia, go to Rte 202 South. Pay attention to the lane directions at the merge-curve.

Or you will take the SEPTA train from 30th Street Station to the Malvern Train Station and tell us if you want to use the shuttle from the Malvern Train Stn AgilePhillyCoordinators@YahooGroups.com? Subject=Shuttle

An Update to the 03/29/2019 Brexit: Due to the failed vote on Jan 15, we misdirect your attention to this other bit of news.

Everyone loves the PBS series Victoria . . . . But did you know about Palmerston on Twitter ?

Yes, "Palmerston The Cat" was installed in the Foreign Secretary's office down the block on Downing Street - as a mouser in April 2016
This was mostly in response to "Larry The Cat" who was installed at 10 Downing Street in Feb 2011.

Larry became such a media success that he remains even when if Prime Minister is voted out. And he even got a chance to meet President Obama on one occasion. Larry retains the Title of Chief Mouser, but overall, his prowess as a Mouser is on the low-end. He was helped out briefly by Freya owned by Osborne of the Exchequer.

When President Trump visited 10 Downing, Larry did his bit to protest the visit. (In the US Federal Code, Dr. Wang Wenyi was formally charged on 21 April 2006 with "knowingly and wilfully intimidating, coercing, threatening or harassing … a foreign official performing his duties," by confronting Chinese President Hu Jintao on 20 April 2006) Larry escaped prosecution and injury when he did a lie-in under President Trump's limo called the Beast on June 4 2019.)

Larry also has his own merchandise line

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KF71Hd1ur8yg2BeJaZRA2bJj7fxUh5V3/view

Last to be installed in the government circles was "Gladstone the Cat" in June 2016 as Chief Mouser at the Treasury, followed by Evie, named after Dame Evelyn Sharp, the first female permanent secretary, and Ossie after Sir Edward Osmotherly, author of the Osmotherly Rules, the guide that civil servants have when giving evidence to parliamentary select committees.

It seems that most of these roles are like the US Supreme Court and are appointments for life. But Palmerston is unique in that he has appointed other mousers (Lawrence of Abdoun named after Lawrence of Arabia , and Leyla Pixie in Instanbul ) to their overseas roles.

It was on May 10 1869, that the Transcontinental Railroad was completed.

The Federal Government Contracts were approved by President Lincoln in 1861.

And then the great work began - Surveying, Engineering, Tunneling, Blasting, Digging.

A majority of workers on the West Side of the build were Chinese while Irish were predominant on the Eastern Side. No Chinese were invited to the celebration exercise, and the issues of the treatment of Chinese, Irish and Native American Lands should not go unremembered even while we celebrate this achievement.

It was the Moon Landing of the 1860's. The news of the last spike was sent by telegraph to a waiting nation at 12:47 pm using just four letters . . . D O N E

For some background, the AgilePhilly group celebrated World Retrospective Day on February 27 - where teams reflected on the good (and not-so-good) of their teams' progress on www.WorldRetroDay.com

The next step for suggested improvements from a Retrospective is often for teams to make a better Definition of Done to keep the team and the team members focused. The goal of all technical projects is to move small tasks from a column of TODO to IN-PROGRESS to DONE.

Software Engineers are expensive talent. We want them to produce quality, but not over-produce features that will not be used. The topics that we will talk about to prevent Scope Creep include:

Definition of Done

Break down your expectations for Proof of Concept, Prototype, or Minimal Vaiable Feature for Production

Definition of Ready ( Ready to begin development work )

A separate swim column for Defn of Ready became a 19% improvement in flow

When do we build "Good Enuff" and when do we build "Excellent" ?

The eternal question

Acceptance Criteria described in a Gerkin Style of BDD Behavior Driven Design that goes beyond TDD

The goal of BDD is for Business people to write the tests

Is your company going the way of the Pony Express ?

It was not the Transcontinental Railroad that killed the Pony Express. It was the Transcontinental Telegraph that killed it in two days time. Know your marketplace and your competitors' advantage.

The Schedule being developed

A Definition of Done is

what stops Scope Creep! Besides Requirements for a system, a Definition of Done for each sub-task tells us what to build and what to test. It tells us what the Acceptance Tests will be. It stops us from building more than is required or doing more tests than are needed. As the great Edward Demming said,

Doing your best is not enough.
First, you must know what to do and then do your best.

Refer to https://www.scrumalliance.org/community/articles/2008/september/what-is-definition-of-done-(dod) for a longer description. Note that a Description of Done can be more than just programming. Performance tests, documentation for support staff and other pieces that make up a complete system should be part of the Definition of Done.

Tell your friends, put www.DefiningDone.org into a Linked In post or Twitter, or leave a comment on what you want to hear discussed. And send us some Train Trivia from the Age of Steam. Techs love trivia.

Most of the rail was for single passage ( not for two way traffic ) Resource management was even then part of their Definition of Done.

The two railway companies built past each other. They were paid by the mile, so more miles were built than were necessary. Still, they finished ahead of schedule and under budget.

In anticipation the day before May 10, Chicago held an impromptu celebratory parade that was 7 miles long. Upon hearing the news on May 10, Philadelphia had fire engines lined up in front of Independence Hall with bells and whistles clamoring - while Boston was the sole American city to ignore the event. A hundred guns were fired in a salute at City Hall Park in New York City, and the lead story in the New York Times the next day was "The long looked-for moment has arrived. The construction of the Pacific Railroad is un fait accompli "

This great technical accomplishment was at Promontory Summit. The misnomer "Promontory Point" is still used by many due to the handy alliteration of two P's.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_spike

During the ceremony, Central Pacific's Leland Stanford and Union Pacific's Thomas Durant both missed hitting the last spike. The spike had been wired to a telegraph and they only needed to tap it. The ceremony's telegrapher W. N. Shilling frustrated with their delay completed the circuit to send out the message D O N E.

Notes from the Virtual Meeting in 2019 ( Feb 27 2019 )

Wide Ranging Topics

Generally One Hour limit for Retrospectives. And noone wants their Retros to descend into B*tch Sessions , but so often it is hard for the team to "Engage" ( They are in a Rut )

So Everyone is trying different styles/formats of Retros.

But deciding on "One Action Item" to work seems to help - and put it on the BIG BOARD or BACKLOG to remind the team of it.

Do we want to mix our Team Action-Improvement into the User-Stories/ User-Impact? Generally Yes !

And then there is positioning it / talking about a "Flowtrospective" !

And there is the challenge of Distributed Teams - even using Video Games to build trust and rapport with remote team members.

Some use Tools like Quiplash, Scatterspoke - - but get a tool that every team member can add to

Notes from the Virtual Meeting in 2018 ( Feb 6 2018 )

Impressions

Seeing "Risk" or "Trouble" during a retrospective can be very subjective.

Stock Phrase: Assuming we did all that, what do you expect to be different? What gets unblocked? How does your day change?

Engage, Listen, Confront = Clarity

Teams sometimes have Trouble getting to Specifics.

Other questions raised

Size of team during the retrospective

Good sound headsets for remote teams = more important than video

IceBreakers to start, like Pictionary of your Superpower

Agenda for a Retrospective is a Five Part Play . . .

Set the Stage.

Gather data.

Generate insights

The defining features of most Bullet Trains ( like Japan's Shinkansen trains ) are their extraordinarily long noses, designed not to improve their aerodynamics, but primarily to eliminate sonic booms caused by the "piston effect" of trains entering tunnels and forcing compression waves out of the other end at supersonic speeds.

Probable topics for the Intro Sessions are:

The FLOW of a SCRUM Sprint

WHY KANBAN and its TERMINOLOGY is COOL

= Other Ideas to Improve our Meetings =

like what we see at Agile New England

This is an couple of interesting facets of the AgileNewEngland User Group meetings

It looks to me like they have no annual dues. I believe AgileBoston has annual dues. www.agileBoston.org

Their other offerings below – are things that we have talked or hinted at.

These Special Interest Groups meet from 5:45 to 6:45 in a corner of the main room,

followed by the main meeting.

They are something to consider as the next level that AgilePhilly might attempt.

I will be contacting the people who are running these SIGs to see if there is staying power.

( Often these endeavors fall apart from disinterest.)

At the December 6 Meeting of Agile New England

Agile 101: TBD

Agile 101 classes start at 5:45 and last one hour. A sign-up sheet is posted at 5:30 near the check-in table. Capacity is limited to 10 people per class.

Scrum Master/Agile Coach Lean Coffee Circle

The group will meet from 5:45 to 6:45 in the main room to exchange ideas and advice on any Agile related topics. Up to 15 people, first come first served. At the start, we will choose from topics proposed by those attending. Every attendee is invited to share his or her perspective. Questions? Email timbrook1.1@gmail.com.

Agile Dojo

The Agile Dojo gives Agile practitioners an opportunity to improve Agile techniques. Participants practice an Agile Skill such as facilitation, requirements elicitation, or estimation, then receive feedback. The group meets from 6:00 to 6:50 and is facilitated by Richard Kasperowski, Bruce Conner, and Wendy Wong. For more information contact r@kasperowski.com.

Glad to have you aboard.

All our meetings in the evenings are free and they are in both the western suburbs and in center-city downtown Philadelphia, and soon in South Jersey.

But we also cross-list a lot of other groups that have meetings you may be interested in ( the "Software as a Craft" meetup from Downtown is one you might want to become familiar with.) And at our website, you will see PB&J = Philly, Bucks County & Jersey events listed, as well as ours which are marked with the BIG BLUE LIBERTY BELL.

For our Agile Philly meetings, ALL WE ASK is that you keep your RSVP current on our events you sign up for, so our headcount for the pizza is accurate. (On our event webpages, you can update your RSVP checkoff button anytime, from "Definitely Yes" to "No" to "Maybe" as your busy schedule changes).

And we at AgilePhilly will always strive to keep your inbox clean by only sending out 2 or 3 emails a month.

You may have missed our latest email blast of upcoming AgilePhilly meetings and the other events we cross-post, so just bookmark our meeting schedule at http://www.agilephilly.com/events/event/listUpcoming

and if you think you will have an immediate need anytime to ask a question or two, tell us on our AgilePhilly.Slack.com chat area.

Or think about joining our AgilePhilly Mentoring Program, where we can always use more Mentors and Mentees http://www.agilephilly.com/page/amp-up-your-skills

So as a participant at our meetings, we encourage you to go to the Upper Left Corner of our website into My Profile and customize your enrollment with a picture.

Our monthly meetings taper off for the summer, as we start plan our October 22nd AgilePhilly All Day Conference. ( We just concluded the Fall conference for 2018.)

What we covered at these are here = http://www.agilephilly.com/page/fall-2018-conf

So get ready for more Monthly meetings in the Western Suburbs, Meetings in downtown Philly, and our upcoming conferences where AgilePhilly will have different tracks of Agile Topics for you.

Yes, look for more great meetings to come - where the pizza will flow. Or we hope it will.

As always, Corporate Food Sponsors for our monthly meetings are always welcome, so think about having your company contribute.

DIRECTIONS FROM THE AIRPORT AREA . . . AND FOR PEOPLE FROM SOUTH JERSEY . . . AVOID THE PARKING LOT - PA TURNPIKE WESTBOUND in the MORNING

One option is to go I-95 North to the Schulkyll Expressway I-76 North to King of Prussia and then Rte 202 South.

From South Jersey, I prefer the Commodore Barry Bridge to Rte 322 North to Rte 202 North

Using Mapping Techniques to Navigate Problem Areas

by Pete Fleming, Deborah Wyse and John Voris.

Our job is to see problems and resolve them. We need to tackle these subjective areas objectively, in order to achieve buy-in from upper management and our teams. Facilitated Mapping builds shared understanding and keeps the focus on value, in a variety of ways.

This workshop presents three complementary techniques that you can use to highlight and navigate through project challenges. For example, how do we identify the good and bad seen within our teams? How do we convene business and technology stakeholders to plan so that features support business activities? How can we organize information about the user needs and behaviors, in order to understand their entire experience and therefore maximize value?

Shu Ha Ri, Impact Mapping and Customer Journey Mapping are proven methods that guide brainstorming, planning and prioritization, and help teams navigate through the problems that often arise during these activities. This interactive workshop is relevant for technologists, designers, product owners, or anyone else working on a software product.

Scaling the Agile Transition Wall

by Kimberly Davis

Transitioning from traditional software development approaches to an Agile approach is difficult for any organization. Scaling the Agile Transition Wall offers insights into getting started with Agile and implementing it at scale.

From implementation mistakes, lessons learned and the value of small victories, these lessons in transition can be applied to all teams and all organizations. Kimberly will talk on implementing scaled agile rather than what it is. She works for a the department of defense and our prime PO is Lockheed Martin. They've implemented scaled agile across both our organizations since they're primarily responsible for the systems engineering and we do the software for them.

She is responsible for scaling it throughout her organization (AFMS) and she has a counterpart at Lockheed. So implementing Scaled Agile ( what not to do and what to do, leadership buy-in, etc.) are the many lessons she has learned.

Bio: Kimberly Davis is the Lead Agile Architect for ASRC Federal Mission Solutions (AFMS) located in Moorestown, NJ and is primarily responsible for the transition from Waterfall to Agile for real-time, mission critical defense systems. This is a large scaled effort that involves AFMS and their customer, Lockheed Martin Rotary Mission Systems.

Kimberly is an Agile enthusiast and practitioner with certifications in CSM, CSPO, and CAL1 from the Scrum Alliance, an SA and SP from Scaled Agile, and finally a PMI-ACP from the Project Management Institute.

Measuring the Urgency Index

by Travis Bjorklund and Crystal Harris

Organizations that adopt Scrum, Kanban, SAFe, or other agile methodologies get access to a bevy of new metrics: velocity, predictability, cycle time, variability, and many more. These metrics can help an organization incrementally improve and focus their transformation – or they can just drive the teams to misery. So where do you start? First, track the urgency index.

Bios: Travis Bjorklund is a team builder, a lean-agilist, a devops enthusiast, a process engineer, and a change agent.
by Kimberly Davis

Agile Teams are the heart of delivering value. The success, quality and timeliness of delivered solutions can vary greatly based on the inner operations from within a team. Whether or not a team is coming together for the first time, or has been working together for a long time, leaders must guide the team down a successful path so they can continuously delight their customers and stakeholders.

Teams that consistently deliver, continuously learn and enjoy working with one another often thrive off each other’s skills, knowledge and motivation. Kimberly Davis will discuss the patterns and behaviors for a team to go from “Shu” , learning to work together, to the “Ha” phase, learning to adapt as a team, to the “Ri” phase, where they are motivated practitioners of a practice they preach and take pride in.

In transforming a government-subcontract-Waterfall organization, Kimberly will share the methods she has used for identifying such patterns and behaviors and solutions for building strong and united teams, and the critical coaching mechanisms necessary for get through these three stages.

by David Hughes

Starting in the 1990s with the advent of activity-based costing and in 2003 with the publication of Beyond Budgeting, ideas for Lean Costing have grown along with the Lean and Agile movements. Unfortunately, lightweight methods had not evolved prior to the appearance of Accepted Value Costing (AVC) in 2018.

This workshop will share the research that led to the development of AVC. You will be empowered to decide for yourself how to “connect the dots” for measuring success in Lean Costing terms by comparing and contrasting AVC with other approaches. The focus is on empirical measures and practical models for Lean Costing. You will leave equipped to explore this important topic further on your own.

Without a good culture, strategy will fail. Yet without a strategy, a good culture will still produce results.

In this session, we look at different aspects of culture that contribute toward happy, productive, high performing teams and how it relates to the principles of Agility:

Examples include

Strong organizational cultures, but also the associated business failures due to poor cultures.

How to assess your current culture using the Laloux Culture Model, who can affect it, and how to intentionally design for it to produce better outcomes.

by Jennifer Honerman

Have you been searching for "the answer" of what metrics will illuminate the agility of your organization? Have you attended conferences and meet ups promising you the answer, only to walk away feeling unsatisfied? Me too!

In this session, I will share my experience leading Capital One's Credit Card organization through this journey after several failed implementations. You'll get to hear what we tried, what we learned from previous failed attempts, and ultimately how we came to the realization that the "right" answer for us is really a reflection of our culture and values, from knowing what the CIO thinks he wants, to working with your team and business partners to finally relate values and significant metrics.

Bio: Jennifer Honerman of Capital One leads the Agile Coaching Practice for Capital One's Consumer Bank. Jen has over 15 years of delivery and coaching experience in high tech and financial services organization.

The 4 P’s of Product Management

by Anu Smalley

Product development is a fickle business.. Everyone wants something, but it's hard to navigate the forest through the trees. Opinions run rampant. Needs and demands seem to conflict one another. And there is always more functional expectation than there is capacity. Agile product management has provided techniques, patterns, and mindsets that have proven useful in navigating your course through these mazes. And Anu Smalley is an experienced guide who has been helping organizations and teams be successful for years. Anu will explore vision-setting and chartering as critical initial focus points—beginning with the end in mind. Then she'll share a set of Do's and Don'ts when it comes to evolving a product. She'll also bring a fresh perspective to the notion of an MVP and how to chart your course (pivot) successfully while avoiding those rocks and shoals. And finally, Anu will explore the lost art of experimentation and finding your customers compass by effective listening towards understanding and delivering what they truly need.
