SUMMARY:Thurs Feb 18 Penn State Great Valley - \"How Good is Good Enou
 gh\" for software
DESCRIPTION:How Good is Good Enough?\nThe Ethical Significance of Your
  Answer\nPresenter: Keith W. Miller, Ph.D.\n\n\nThursday, February 18
 - 5:00 p.m.\nPenn State Great Valley, Main Building, Room 130\nRoute 2
02 and Route 29, Malvern PA\n\n\nThe seemingly straightforward questio
n, \"How good is good enough?\" turns out to be surprisingly challengi
ng to answer for software engineers.\n\nThis talk will explore how tha
t challenge is met in software engineering, then focus on the ethical
significance of different answers. Some answers emphasize technical me
asures, drawing on work in statistics, computer science, and engineeri
ng, while another approach emphasizes economics and marketing.\n\nAnot
her answer is primarily ethical, requiring examination of the interpla
y of human values and the quantitative measures emphasized by other ap
proaches. Although this does not make the \"how good\" decision easy,
it does clarify some important dimensions of the issue that other appr
oaches do not engage.\n\n\nDr. Miller's research includes software tes
ting and computer ethics. He is the author or co-author of over 300 ar
ticles and presentations. His recent work is interdisciplinary, combin
ing computer science and philosophy to examine the ethics of computing
. Dr. Miller is the editor of IEEE Technology and Society Magazine, an
d an associate editor of IEEE's IT Pro Magazine, as well as being the
Schewe Professor of Computer Science, University of Illinois, Springfi
eld\n\nThis presentation is free and open to faculty, staff, students,
and the community.\nTo RSVP, please contact Amanda at \nmailto:ach14@
