SUMMARY:The Aberfan Disaster in England
DESCRIPTION:The Netflix series \"The Crown\" brought attention to the
Aberfan Disaster of 1966.\r\n\r\nDisaster struck at about 9.15 on the
morning of October 21, 1966, when a colliery waste tip -- a pile of mi
ning waste material -- collapsed following heavy rain.\r\nThe rainfall
in the days prior to the disaster had led to a build-up of water in t
he tip, saturating the waste material and causing 3.8 million cubic fe
et of rubbish to cascade down the hillside and into the village below.
\r\nThe spoil crashed into the Pantglas area of the village, engulfing
houses and the Pantglas Junior School, where lessons had just begun f
or the morning.\r\nA total of 144 people died in the disaster, includi
ng 116 children and 28 adults. Of the 240 children at the elementary s
chool, 109 were killed, along with five teachers.\r\nThe response\r\nL
ocal residents and miners from the Aberfan colliery led the early resc
ue operation, helping to pull casualties from the wreckage.\r\nNo surv
ivors were found within the debris after 11 a.m.\r\nThe collapse of th
e tip had broken two water mains, which continued to pump water into t
he slip, and it was not until 11.30 a.m. that the water authorities tu
rned off the supply.\r\nA makeshift mortuary was set up at Aberfan's B
ethania Chapel, which remained in place until November 4.\r\nBy 11.30
p.m. on the night of the disaster, 67 bodies had been brought to the m
ortuary and identification had begun.\r\nHarold Wilson, Britain's prim
e minister at the time, visited Aberfan on the evening of October 21 a
nd heard accounts from police and rescue workers.\r\nAn independent in
quiry was set up to look into how the disaster occurred.\r\nRoyal visi
t\r\nLord Snowden, Princess Margaret's husband, and the Queen's husban
d, Prince Philip, were the first royals to visit the devastated villag
e.\r\nThe Queen visited Aberfan on October 29 -- eight days after the
disaster.\r\nThis coincided with the conclusion of the first phase of
the rescue operation, with the final victim being found on October 28.
\r\nOutcome of tribunal\r\nThe following year, a public tribunal into
the disaster concluded that the National Coal Board -- the body that r
 an Britain's then-nationalized coal industry -- was to blame.\r\nThe r
eport stated that the disaster \"could and should have been prevented.
\"\r\n\"The report which follows tells not of wickedness but of ignora
nce, ineptitude and a failure in communications,\" the opening pages o
f the report state.\r\nNo NCB staff were ever prosecuted as a result o
f the disaster, and the organization instead paid compensation to the
 families of the deceased.\r\n\r\nhttp://lite.cnn.io/en/article/h_8bc24
